Ambient Lighting
The ambient lighting illuminates a room without targeting one particular object or area. Soft ambient lighting contributes to the functionality of a space without producing harsh glare which allows the lighting in the room to be as flat and natural as possible. The ambient light is the most common type of lighting used in indoor spaces. It is also known as “general” lighting. and is the most common type of lighting in a standard home build. Traditionally this was a single lamp or chandelier hanging in the middle of the room, however modern lighting and installation methods give home owners many more options.
Accent Lighting
Accent lighting is a type of lighting that’s used to add a pop of color, brightness, or interest to a room. It can be used to draw attention to an object or area and make it stand out. Any type of lamp can be used and can be placed anywhere in the room. Accent lights are perfect for adding personality and making a space or a specific item feel more special.
The primary purpose of accent lighting is to add artistic style or aesthetic appeal to a room. It is often used for decorative purposes or to highlight a particular focal point, such as paintings, photos, furniture pieces, or other display pieces around your home that you want to highlight or a piece of wall art or possibly just to highlight one wall.
For Accent Lighting, wall sconces, track lighting, or picture lights are common lighting fixtures. Dimmers are often used to create mood lighting. Accent lighting can be provided with the installation of Tracked Lighting, Recessed Can Lighting, with angled LED lights or individual LED spot lights or free standing lights.
Task Lighting
A task light, as its name suggests, is used to complete a specific task or function rather than lighting up the entire room. You will typically find this type of lighting in areas where you do day-to-day activities requiring more focused light, such as cooking, reading, writing, and so forth. The focused beam, brightness and concentration help you focus on and identify details of the task you are doing. Task lighting usually provides a narrower, more and concentrated beam than ambient or accent lighting. A specific area is illuminated to provide greater visibility and detail for completing a specific task. You could use desk lamps at your bedside or pendant lights that hang above your kitchen sink or island, recessed lighting in the ceiling above a desk or LED lights under kitchen cupboards.
Types of Bulbs and Lighting Technology
Incandescent Bulbs
Incandescent bulbs have been the most common type of bulb in buildings since the invention of bulbs and have only recently replaced by the newer form of lighting technology including LEDs, Fluorescent and CFL bulbs. An incandescent bulb contains a filament which will glow when heated by an electric current. The glass bulb contains either a vacuum, argon or a nitrogen atmosphere to reduce evaporation of the filament which would burn out immediately if open to the air.
Unfortunately due to the frequent heating cooling the filament does break down and burn out much more quickly than more modern lighting technologies. Incandescent bulbs only work for 700–1000 hours and are very energy inefficient as they dissipate more heat energy vs light energy.
Fluorescent Lamps
Fluorescent lamps are more complex than the incandescent bulbs. A fluorescent lamp is a tube with a glass envelope containing a gas, usually mercury and other gases, and a phosphor coating. The gas is excited by an electric current passing through the tube. The phosphor coating converts the radiant energy into visible light. Fluorescent lamps use less energy to produce the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb using 4 to 8 times less energy for the same light output. Unfortunately fluorescent lights are more difficult to dispose of due to the mercury inside the tube. Flourescent lights are rarely installed for new lighting installations.
Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL)
CFL bulbs were the first alternative to replace incandescent bulbs in homes and commercial buildings. They are available with a number of standard fittings like Edison Screw or Bayonet so can be a simple replacement for incandescent bulbs. Using the same technology as fluorescent lamps, CFLs produce the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb with less energy consumption. It consists of multiple tubular loops, to form a shape similar to an incandescent bulb. A CFL bulb has a longer lifespan than an incandescent bulb, uses less energy, and is more efficient. However like fluorescent tubes the mercury in the loops proves to be problematic when it comes to disposal.
Halogen Lamps
A halogen lamp is a version of an incandescent bulb that features a compact, transparent enclosure that is encased with a tungsten filament. The bulb’s name derives from the fact that bulb is filled with an inert halogen gas. By using an inert gas, the bulb becomes brighter and more durable, resulting in higher luminous efficiency. Halogen lamps are normally smaller than incandescent bulbs. Halogen lighting is most commonly used in vehicles and commercial lighting installations but can sometimes be found to light kitchen worktops or for external flood lighting.
LED Lighting
This type of indoor lighting is best known as an energy-efficient alternative to the light bulbs that were common in most homes throughout the 20th century. In addition to diffracting light in all directions, LEDs can focus light on a specific area or item in your room. LED Lights are long lasting with a lifespan of thousands of hours. Color-changing capabilities are sometimes available through a remote or an application. LED lights are available in many forms, including standard bulbs and decorative and accent fixtures like strip lights and string lights.
Because LED bulbs are energy efficient and come in a variety of colors, they are becoming increasingly popular. LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are semiconductors in which electrons flow through a negatively charged diode and the release of photons combine to emit light from the diode.
LED bulbs are composed of multiple diodes that produce the required light. LEDs are very energy efficient and produce brighter light with less energy use than any other type of bulb. An LED can emit colored light without using a color filter.
Laser Lighting
Laser lighting is used in a variety of ways in the home. It can be used to highlight specific items in a room, to create dramatic effects in photos or art work or as a feature in it’s own right where the illuminated filaments form a display and at the same time light up a room or wall.
Lasers lighting is produced with laser equipment and the light is directed through glass filaments. Laser lighting is available in a wide range of fixture types. Since lasers travel along a narrow beam, their brightness and focus do not fade with distance. Due to its narrow path, it is also very easy to diffract a beam into thousands of smaller ones.
Understanding Kelvin Color Temperature, Lumens and Wattage
The color temperature of LED lighting is not related to the heat generated. LED color temperature is a measure of the color appearance of the light produced. It is measured in Kelvin (K), a unit of temperature but not directly related to the actual temperature of the bulb.
The heat produced by an LED bulb is generally not significant compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, which produce a lot of heat as a byproduct of their operation. LED bulbs are designed to produce light efficiently and generate less heat, which can help reduce cooling costs in buildings.
So, while the color temperature of an LED bulb and the heat it produces may both be measured in Kelvins, they are two separate concepts that are not directly related.
When it comes to lighting, the color temperature of LED lights can have a major effect on the room where they are used. That’s why it’s important to understand the basics of Kelvin color temperature and how it can affect the atmosphere of a space.
What is Kelvin Color Temperature?
Kelvin color temperature is a measure of the color of a light source, expressed in degrees of Kelvin (K). It is based on the principle that a black body radiator emits light of a color that is determined by its temperature. The higher the temperature of the black body radiator, the higher the color temperature of the light it emits.
Which Color Temperature is Best?
When it comes to choosing the right color temperature for a space, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Different color temperatures can create different atmospheres, so it’s important to consider the purpose of the space and the desired effect. In general, it’s recommended to use neutral LED lighting with a color temperature of 4000K for most settings.
What Color Temperature Do I Need for My Space?
The best color temperature for a space will depend on the purpose of the space and the desired atmosphere. For example, a bedroom may benefit from a warmer color temperature of 3000K, while a kitchen may benefit from a cooler color temperature of 5000K.
What is the Best Color Temperature for the Eyes?
When it comes to the best color temperature for the eyes, it’s recommended to use a neutral color temperature of 4000K. This color temperature is closest to natural daylight, which is easier on the eyes and can help reduce eye strain.
Will the Color Temperature Affect the Brightness of the Light?
No, the color temperature of LED bulbs can vary between brands, but it will not affect the brightness of the light. The brightness of the light is determined by the wattage of the bulb, not the color temperature.
