Recessed Ceiling Lighting

Can lights are typically installed in a series or grid pattern to provide even, diffuse lighting throughout a room.

Installing Recessed Can Lighting

Can Lighting

Imagine a “tin can” with a bulb in it. Can lighting is not quite as crude as that, but that is the basic shape of the most common form of recessed ceiling lighting. Can lights consist of three main components: the housing, the trim, and the light bulb. The housing is the metal or plastic enclosure that holds the bulb and protects it from insulation and other materials in the ceiling. The trim is the visible part of the fixture that sits flush with the ceiling or wall and can be designed in a variety of styles and finishes to match the decor of the room. Can lighting requires a few inches of clearance above the ceiling. In most cases the trim only protrudes a fraction f an inch below the ceiling, though if the can lighting is required to direct light to a particular spot on a wall it may include a curved cowl and reflector that protrudes up to about 3/4 of an inch around half of the fitting, often with a white or chrome finished trim.

The most common type of recessed lighting installation are can lights. These are a set of canister shaped light fixtures installed into a hole drilled into the ceiling. The bottom of the canisters are flush with the ceiling, so most of the lighting hardware is hidden from view. Their discreet placement provides a sleek and uncluttered look in any room. A well designed recessed lighting plan, installed correctly offer an even spread of  light that is difficult to achieve with free standing lamps or traditional ceiling pendant light installation or chandeliers.

Homeowners that use our lighting installation services favor recessed lighting as part of their general ambient lighting plan to provide calm and even lighting throughout the room. Recessed Can Lights are versatile enough to install in most places in and around your home, including lounge, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, hallways, and even in covered outdoors areas.

Canless LED Recessed Lighting

LED (Light Emitting Diode) Canless Recessed Lighting is a more recent lighting development as an alternative to LED CAN Lighting. The whole light fixture is very shallow which is not much deeper than the ceiling board. The fixture has a plastic lens which is flush with the lamp bezel and look very sleek and modern and is a popular choice as part of our lighting installation service.

Canless Lighting

As LED lighting technology has developed canless fittings have become available. Canless recessed lighting is a type of recessed lighting that does not require a traditional can or housing to be installed in the ceiling. Instead, the light fixture is designed to be installed directly into the ceiling using clips or other mounting mechanisms. The fixing might be no more than half to three quarters of an inch. Canless recessed lighting can be a good option for those who want a more streamlined, modern look or for spaces where there may not be enough clearance in the ceiling for a traditional can.

Strip LED Light Installation

Indoor LED Lights in the form of strip lighting is a relatively new technology. The light that is emitted from LED strip lighting is directional, and is commonly used in public areas, where its bright lighting is aesthetically pleasing. Installation of LED strip lighting can be a similar cost to traditional lighting technologies, depending on your requirements. LED strip lighting is an alternative to using multiple separate lighting units, and are always the most energy efficient choice.

The LED ‘s are usually very small, under 1/8 of an inch in some cases. The LED’s are mounted on a flexible plastic strip. The LED’s come in a range of whites from Cool White, Warm White, Daylight White through a range of Greens, Blues, Violets, Yellows, Oranges and Reds and more. LED Strip Lights can be installed in many locations around your home: under kitchen cabinets, inside closets, behind mirrors, above dressing tables, hidden behind skirting boards, in ceilings or edges of ceilings or behind cornice, on stairwells and many more locations.

LED strip lighting is more controllable than traditional lighting, allowing you to tailor the intensity of light to the area where it is being used. The more intense the light, the brighter the room will appear to be. The LED strip lighting can be used with multiple lights in a range of colors, making it ideal for creating different color moods. With some strip lights you control the brightness, color and intensity to create the mood you desire, such as relaxing, or an exciting mood by using a remote

In some locations where It is not practical to completely hide the LED strip it is installed inside a U shaped extrusion covered with a plastic diffuser which allows light to spread over a wide area with the individual diodes hidden inside. This is a common way to install LED lighting into a ceiling as an alternative to CAN lighting.

For some types of LED installations you are more likely to need a professional to replace a faulty strip of LED lights compared to replacing a standard bulb.. Recessed CAN light bulbs are generally replaceable by the home owner.

Planning Ceiling Recessed Lighting

When it comes to recessed ceiling lighting, there is a formula that must be followed in order to ensure the best possible results. The distance between the lights should always be double what it is at the ends. This formula, combined with the number of lights, the layout, and the dimensions of the room or surface, is what’s used to calculate the placement of recessed lighting in the ceiling.

Your Goals

Before you start, it’s important to define your goal for the lighting. The overarching goal of your lighting will determine the layout style and individual calculations that you will use. Ambient lighting, accent lighting, and task lighting are all popular options or a mixture of these.

Using Shadows to Your Advantage

Shadows can be used to create a dramatic effect in a room. By placing the lights in strategic locations, you can create shadows that will add depth and interest to the space.

For example, if you’re using accent lighting, you can place the lights in a way that will create shadows on the walls. This will draw the eye to certain areas of the room and create a more interesting look.

Without expert planning it is very easy to end up with lighting that does not fully cover the area to be illuminated or may cause unwanted shadows. It is also very easy to chose the wrong bulb type, color balance and lumens (brightness)

Our experts will suggest the number of lights, the wattage lumens and color balance required to illuminate the room or the area to be be illuminated.

Color Balance VS Wattage or Lumens

With the older traditional incandescent bulbs, wattage was the main difference between different bulbs. The higher the wattage, the brighter the light and the more power used. While some bulbs provided a whiter light than others this something that was not given much consideration. With modern LED lighting wattage is still stated on the packaging, but Color Temperature and Lumens are the two main terms you should consider.

========

Color temperature

Firstly, color temperature of LED bulbs is not related to the heat produced by the bulb. The color temperature of an LED bulb is a measure of the color appearance of the light it produces

LED bulbs are available in a range of color temperatures, typically ranging from 2700K to 6500K. The lower end of the range 2700K to 3000K produces a warm, yellowish light that is similar to traditional incandescent bulbs. 4000k to 5000k produces a white light suitable for kitchens or work areas. The higher range from 5000K to 6500k produces a cooler, bluish light that is often described as “daylight” and is often used in industrial or medical situations.

The best color temperature for the living room will depend on the desired atmosphere. For a cozy, inviting atmosphere, a warmer color temperature of 3000K is recommended.

It’s important to note that color temperature is not a measure of the brightness of the bulb, but rather its color appearance. Different color temperatures are better suited for different applications.

Lumens and Wattage

Lumens measure the brightness of an LED bulb, while wattage measures its power consumption. With LED technology, wattage is no longer a reliable way to compare the brightness of bulbs. Instead, lumens are the standard unit of measurement for brightness. A higher lumen rating means the bulb produces more light, regardless of its wattage. More about Lumens and Wattage here
